Great Northern Distillery
Distilled 2019
200 litre Bourbon Cask
Current ABV - 58.38%
Under bond at Stafford Bonded
Storage & insurance paid until Nov 2025
The cask is currently stored under bond at Stafford Bonded in Wexford as part of the Celtic Whiskey Cask program. The purchaser has the following options:
-
Keep the cask at Stafford Bonded under the Celtic Whiskey bond account for further maturation. In this case, the buyer must agree to the Terms & Conditions outlined below. The yearly storage/insurance fee is €130 (with potential inflationary increases) and includes a 20cl annual sample to track maturation.
-
Remove the cask from bond, paying the excise duty and VAT in full. The excise duty is €42.57 per LPA, and VAT is charged at 23%.
-
Transfer the cask from Stafford Bonded to an alternative bonded warehouse. The buyer would be responsible for the delivery charge and any associated costs.
Considerations When Purchasing a Cask
Angels’ Share:
When the cask was distilled in 2019, it was reduced to 63% for casking. After that, it is estimated that the cask will lose approximately 3-4% to the angels in the first year and around 2% per year thereafter. The cask holds about 200 liters, which would equate to approximately 285 bottles at cask strength or 448 bottles at 40% ABV. After 10 years, it is expected that around 20% will be lost to the angels, leaving approximately 250 bottles at cask strength or 400 bottles at 40% ABV.
Bottling:
There are several bottling companies in Ireland, and we can provide you with their details. Once the cask is bottled, you may either choose to keep the bottled stock under bond, incurring yearly storage fees, or remove it from bond and pay the duty and VAT. At today’s duty rate of €42.57 per LPA, the cost per bottle would be €11.92 at 40% ABV and €16.39 at 55% ABV. VAT at the current rate of 23% would be added to the combined cost of whiskey and duty.
Why Buy a Cask?
Buyers typically fall into two groups: individuals purchasing for enjoyment or as part of a group looking to follow the cask’s journey and decide on maturation length or potential cask transfers, and investors purchasing as an asset.
The value of whiskey casks ultimately depends on supply and demand. While some companies claim substantial profits from cask investments, we at Celtic Whiskey prefer to temper such expectations. It is important to note that cask values can fluctuate, so, as with any investment, expert advice is recommended for those purchasing with financial gain in mind.
